WORKING WITH SHANNON BOWMAN

You understand the pattern. But it still affects you.

You may already understand your patterns and why they developed, yet the same anxiety, emotional reactions or relationship difficulties keep returning.

Many of Shannon’s clients are busy professionals, business owners and leaders who manage significant responsibilities and appear to be doing well, but privately want to feel calmer, more in control and less affected by the past.

They want therapy to provide more than another explanation. Shannon offers practical, focused EMDR therapy to help create deeper change in how these experiences feel and how you respond to them.

Common Questions

Who is this service best suited to?

Shannon works particularly well with professionals, business owners and leaders who may appear capable and successful on the outside but privately feel anxious, overwhelmed or stuck. This can show up as difficulty slowing down, perfectionism, relationship patterns, imposter syndrome or a sense that past experiences are still affecting the present.

I’m functioning well in life. Is EMDR still appropriate for me?

Yes. You do not need to be in crisis to benefit from EMDR. Many people manage work, family and everyday responsibilities successfully while still experiencing anxiety, emotional overwhelm, relationship difficulties or reactions that feel out of proportion.

What if I don’t think of myself as having trauma?

That is common. Many people seek help for a fear, repeating relationship pattern, difficult childhood experience or persistent feeling that something is holding them back. EMDR can help with both single events and more complex experiences. You do not need to describe yourself as having trauma before exploring whether EMDR may be helpful.

I’ve already tried therapy and understand my patterns. Could EMDR still help?

Possibly. Many clients understand their experiences intellectually but continue to experience the same emotional or physical reactions. EMDR works differently from traditional talk therapy by helping the brain process experiences that may still feel unresolved.

How much does a session cost?

Sessions with Shannon are $295. If you have an eligible Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP, you may claim a Medicare rebate of $89.50, leaving an out-of-pocket cost of $205.50. The full fee is paid at the time of your appointment. Create Balance does not bulk bill.

Do I need a referral or Mental Health Treatment Plan?

No referral is needed to begin. You only need a Mental Health Treatment Plan if you would like to claim the Medicare rebate.

Will I need to describe difficult experiences in detail?

No. EMDR does not require you to describe every detail of an experience. You remain in control of what you share, and Shannon will work at a pace that feels manageable.

What happens during the first session?

The first session focuses on understanding what is happening, what you would like to change and whether EMDR is the right approach for you. There is no pressure to begin processing difficult memories immediately. Preparation and establishing a sense of safety come first.

Is EMDR safe, and how will I be prepared?

EMDR is a well-researched therapy when delivered by a trained practitioner. Some sessions can bring up strong emotions, so Shannon will help you develop strategies to manage these experiences before beginning memory processing. You remain in control throughout the process.

How many sessions will I need?

There is no fixed number of sessions. It depends on what you want to address, your history and how you respond to the therapy. A single experience may require fewer sessions, while childhood or more complex experiences commonly require longer-term work. Shannon will discuss a realistic approach with you following your initial assessment.

Is therapy confidential for professionals and business owners?

Yes. Your sessions are private and confidential, including if you hold a leadership position or work within the Geelong business community. There are limited legal and safety exceptions to confidentiality, which will be explained clearly.

Are sessions available in person and by telehealth?

Yes. Sessions are available in person at 253 Latrobe Terrace, Geelong, and through secure telehealth. Shannon generally prefers to provide EMDR in person, although telehealth can work well when suitable privacy and technology are available.

Do you work with neurodivergent clients?

Yes. Shannon works with ADHD and other neurodivergent clients and adapts the pace, communication and preparation to suit how each person thinks, processes information and experiences emotions.

Will I be working with Shannon?

Your enquiry will be considered for Shannon first. Our team will speak with you about what you would like help with and whether Shannon is the appropriate clinical fit. If his availability or approach is not right for you, the team can discuss other EMDR-trained clinicians at Create Balance before making any booking.

How soon can I start?

Shannon is currently accepting new referrals, although appointment availability can change. After you submit the enquiry form, our team will contact you within one business day to discuss current options and possible appointment times.

EMDR can help if you're struggling with…

If any of these feel familiar, EMDR may give you the shift talk therapy hasn't.

Trauma & PTSD

Flashbacks, hypervigilance, or a single event that still feels like it's happening now.

Anxiety & Panic

Racing thoughts, chronic worry, or panic attacks that come out of nowhere.

Childhood Wounds

Patterns in relationships, work, or self-worth that trace back further than you'd like.

Overwhelm & Burnout

Holding it together on the outside while feeling frayed and depleted underneath.

Phobias & Fears

Specific fears (driving, flying, medical) that shrink the size of your life.

"Stuck" in Talk Therapy

You understand your patterns intellectually, but your body hasn't caught up.

What is EMDR, exactly?

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing. It's a structured therapy developed in 1987 and endorsed by the World Health Organization for trauma.

Instead of only talking about difficult memories, EMDR uses gentle side-to-side eye movements (or tapping, or sound) while you briefly focus on a memory. This helps your brain do what it couldn't at the time: process the experience and file it away as the past, not the present.

Most clients notice a shift in how a memory feels within a few sessions. You stay in control the whole time, and you don't have to describe events in detail unless you choose to.
